Origins
Southeast Asian Studies at Brown University has faced fluctuations in course offerings and key faculty departures since the 1960s. To address these challenges, the Southeast Asian Studies Initiative (SEASI) was founded in spring 2017 by students advocating for the development of South East Asian studies at Brown. SEASI has been pivotal in advancing Southeast Asian Studies through symposia, book clubs, and exhibitions. Their efforts, along with support from the Brown-RISD Vietnamese Students Association and other community members, led to the introduction of Vietnamese language classes in Fall 2021.
Currently, Visiting Lecturer Trang Tran teaches Beginner and Intermediate Vietnamese each semester, nurturing a vibrant and closely-knit community of students dedicated to the Vietnamese language and culture. Looking ahead, SEASI envisions establishing a Department of Southeast Asian Studies at Brown, with plans to expand the program to include other Southeast Asian languages and cultures.
